Information Systems and Quality ImprovementNursing Leadership and Healthcare Informatics Introduction As outlined in the Technology Informatics Guiding Educational Reform (TIGER) nurse leaders understand the power of technology in the management of complex healthcare information, and playan integral part in defining and implementing information systems by working across healthcare disciplines to integrate knowledge, improve patient quality of care and safety and look to thefuture in order to advance information systems that can integrate nursing practice, evidence based practice and research. Healthcare informatics is the intersection of data management andquality (Johnson, 2009). The content in Module C will assist nurses to understand information systems and technologies as the foundation for evidence-based practice, clinical-decision supporttools and the electronic health record. Objectives 1. Explore the issues of information system technology as it relates to: a. Patient safety b. Ethics/genomics c. Information security/confidentiality d. Regulatory requirements 2. Describe current and future information system technology trends related to quality improvement, evidence based practice, genomics, and patient safety. 3. Describe the nursing leadership role in organizational committees, peer review committees, nursing organizations, and community groups to improve the quality of healthcare for patients,families, populations and communities through the use of information system management. 4. Analyze information system technology knowledge gaps and barriers to building safer systems and improving patient care. 5. Describe patient care technologies, information systems, or communication devices that support safe nursing practice 6.
