First, it is intended to give you the opportunity to put into practice the various concepts covered in the course, notably the notions of developing tactics to implement the strategies that will enable you to achieve your objectives. Secondly, this installment will give you the chance to develop two of the most important marketing communications tools of all: your resume and cover letter. Typically, these act as the one and only chance you?ll have to make a first impression. A well-written resume and cover letter can go a long way towards ensuring that you won?t be creating your last impression as well!Preparing for Installment 3To submit Installment 3, you?ll need to upload a WORD document. No other format will be accepted. Make sure to respect the mandatory format: 5 double-spaced pages (excluding cover letter, resume, appendices and bibliography), 12 pts Arial or Times New Roman, one-inch margins all around. Failure to respect these formatting rules will result in deductions.This installment has three parts:a) your cover letterb) your resumec) your marketing tacticsPART A: MY COVER LETTER (MAXIMUM: 1 page, 20 points)With the understanding that its purpose is to let readers know what you?re sending, why you?re sending it and how they can benefit from reading it, prepare a cover letter for your resume. To fulfill this purpose, ensure that:? it uses only 12-pt font, Arial or Times New Roman? margins are set and respected at 1 inch all around (top, bottom, left, and right)? single-spaced? with appropriate style elements: date, addressee, signature, etc.? it?s attention-getting? builds interest and increases desire on the part of the reader to invite you for an interview? demonstrates that you understand the culture of organization that you?re applying to.? emphasizes your brand promise and your key brand attributes and benefits.Then, write your cover letter as if you?re writing to a bank manager for a loan to start your business or professional practice or as if you?re writing to a gallery owner you wish to convince to show your art.Here are some tips for writing your cover letter:o Build in skim value. In her Guide to Managerial Communication, author Mary Munter suggests to build in skim value to make your document more reader-friendly. The reader should be able to quickly grasp your key ideas/arguments and the connection between them. Pay attention to the lead-in, which is the first sentence of every paragraph: it should clearly state the main idea developed in the paragraph.o Spell check and proof read your submission aloud. Use electronic spell- and grammar- checkers to help but do not trust them blindly. To effectively proofread and correct mistakes, read your document once in the normal beginning-to-end flow and then re-read it in the reverse order end-to-beginning.o First rule of marketing: always keep your audience?s needs in mind. Or as writers like to say ?Write to the reader.? This means you have to constantly remind yourself who your reader is, what his/her needs and objectives are when reading your document. In this case your reader is your potential employer, client or lender.o Writing tips:o Stay clear about and focused on your purpose: to secure an interview with your targeted employer, to get your prime prospect to buy your product, service, or art, to get a meeting with a bank managero Use every day English whenever possible.o Avoid jargon and legal words.o Use active verbs whenever possible.o Be concise: make every word count. The best sentences have 15 to 20 words. When a sentence has reached 3 type-written lines, it?s time to insert a period and start a new one.o State one idea per sentence.o Avoid vague qualifiers and needless superlatives (i.e., vast, huge, magnificent, etc.).o Avoid long adverbs/words; use them only if they truly add needed value to your sentence.o Revise your final document. It takes longer to write a concise and impactful document than to write a long one, so give yourself enough time to revise, prune and sharpen your document before you submit it. You may want to let your plan sit for a few days. Then read it aloud to yourself. Then EDIT it one last time before submitting.Grading: What we are looking for? Getting attention: the first two sentences should give the reader a compelling reason to read the rest of the letter.? Builds interest: And your letter increases desire to read the resume and to meet with you.? Well targeted: tone, content and presentation are adapted to the target reader and the organization.? Appearance: appropriate font and organization as well as perfect grammar and spelling.? Conventions: dated, appropriate greeting, signature, return address.PART B: MY RESUME (MAXIMUM: 2 PAGES single spaced, 20 POINTS)With the understanding that its purpose is to spark reader?s interest and create an interview opportunity, prepare a resume that will give you the best chances to achieve these goals. Keep in mind that your resume will most likely be competing with hundreds of others and ensure that it:? is organized so to showcase your strengths? is written and designed to impress the reader without lying or fudging the truth? conveys your full augmented product and articulates the brand that is YOU, including your unique selling proposition? works perfectly in both traditional and electronic formatsGrading: What we look for? Organization and layout: make vital information stand out. Ensure that it flows in an easy-to-read manner. Overall professional appearance is essential.? Grammar and spelling: no typos or grammatical errors, good sentence structure? Uniqueness: stands out from the ordinary and is compelling. Moves the reader to action so that he or she will want to invite you for an interview.? Appropriateness to target market: attracts and speaks directly to your chosen readerPART C: MY TACTICAL PLAN (MAXIMUM: 1100 WORDS, 60 POINTS)In this part of Installment 3, you will be setting out the tactics necessary to execute the strategies you outlined in Installment 2. You?ll also need to set out the evaluation or control measures you intend to use to monitor your own progress.
